CHICAGO Ereck Flowers Hoodie , Dec. 14 (Xinhua) -- Doctors at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis found that radiation therapy can be used to treat patients with a life-threatening heart rhythm.

They have so far treated five patients who had irregular heart rhythms, called ventricular tachycardia, at the School of Medicine.

The five patients in the study had undergone catheter ablation procedures and their ventricular tachycardia returned, or they were unable to go through the procedure because of other high-risk medical conditions.

In the three months before treatment with noninvasive radiation therapy, the five patients together experienced more than 6,500 ventricular tachycardia events. The average number of events per patient during this time was 1 Sterling Shepard Hoodie ,315, with a range of five to 4,312. During the first six weeks following radiation therapy, as the patients were recovering, they experienced a total of 680 episodes. In the one year the patients continued to be followed, they collectively had four events. Two patients didn't experience any episodes at all.

To be specific Eli Apple Hoodie , of the five patients, one patient aged over 80 died in the first month after treatment of causes unlikely to be related to treatment. The remaining four, all in their 60s, are alive two years after radiation therapy, with two patients living unassisted without ventricular tachycardia.

The single dose of radiation these patients received is on par with what might be given to a patient with an early-stage lung tumor.

The radiation therapy does not take effect immediately. The number of arrhythmia events went down but did not disappear in the first six weeks after treatment, which the doctors characterize as a recovery period. After that six-week period Dalvin Tomlinson Hoodie , however, the number of events dropped to almost zero, and patients were able to slowly come off medications used to control the arrhythmia.

Doctors are cautious, saying they are still monitoring for long-term side effects of radiation therapy, such as lung scarring and further damage to the heart itself. They emphasized that their use of external radiation to the heart only included very ill patients in end-stage disease who had run out of options. More research is required before doctors might consider this approach for younger, healthier patients or as a possible addition to standard therapies.

Ventricular tachycardia is estimated to cause 300 Evan Engram Hoodie ,000 deaths per year in the United States and is the leading cause of sudden cardiac death. Standard therapy includes medication and invasive procedures that involve threading a catheter through a vein into the heart and selectively burning the tissue that causes the electrical circuits of the heart to misfire.

An analysis of the patients' experiences is published in the New England Journal of Medicine on Dec. 14.

SANAA, Dec. 3 (Xinhua) -- The latest clashes between two former allies in Yemen, the Houthis and former President Ali Abdullah Saleh, are set to aggravate the humanitarian crisis in the war-torn country.

The two sides allied and seized power in late 2014, triggering a civil war and a military intervention by a coalition led by Saudi Arabia.

"I expect the situation will be complicated and Saleh may not risk further if he does not receive sufficient support from regional players," Yaseen Al-Tamimi B.J. Hill Hoodie , a political writer and analyst, told Xinhua.

"The future of Sanaa is still uncertain. Both sides are using the hit-and-run tactics," he said, noting that it is difficult to drive Houthi forces out of Sanaa, if not impossible.

The breakdown of the Houthi-Saleh alliance, seen as an alliance of convenience Will Hernandez Hoodie , was expected from the first day the it was announced. The Houthis can't forget the revenge for murdering their first leader in the first Saada war by the army of Saleh.

There are several other reasons that led to the latest breakdown of their alliance.

First, the Houthi actions to exclude Saleh are out of concern that Saleh would turn against them at any moment.

Second, Saleh seeks to reach a deal with the Saudi-led coalition, which also hopes to do so amid growing criticism of Saudi Arabia and other members over the war and its catastrophic consequences in the Yemen, which faces one of the worst humanitarian crises.

Third, reliable sources told Xinhua that the Houthis recently knew that Tariq Eli Manning Hoodie , Saleh's nephew who worked as chief of the president guard and special forces before the 2011 protests, has been training forces to fight the Houthis.

The Houthis, which warned Tariq several times over what he is doing, decided to turn against Saleh as they fear that he has received assurances and support from some of the Saudi-led coalition's members.

In the meantime, the armed conflict between Saleh supporters and Houthi forces will exacerbate the humanitarian situation in Yemen.

Ghamdan Al-Yousfi, a political analyst Saquon Barkley Hoodie , told Xinhua that the war between Saleh and Houthis "will lead to closure of cities and cutting food supplies to the largest proportion of the population in the country".

"It will be a total guerilla war that will see no end and add to deepening chaos here," he said.

Around 23 million out of 27 million Yemeni population now live in the Houthi-run regions. The war-torn nation, which is also plagued by a severe cholera epidemic, is now coping with the world's largest humanitarian catastrophe as more than two thirds of the population need humanitarian assistance, the UN says.

Radhwan Fari, a Yemeni journalist Odell Beckham Jr Hoodie , said the Houthi-Saleh war adds to the obstacles facing the peace process in Yemen.

"Many are optimistic this war will help end the conflict here. In my opinion, the op
